Difficulty: Moderate
Distance: You decide
Another fun, and unusual hike offered by the canyons of Zions Nation Park. If you aren't afraid of getting wet, and are sturdy on your feet, this is a great way to cool down in the high heat of the day. Since you are following the river up the canyon and have to turn around to come back out, you can go for as long you you like. We only spent about an hour in the river since we had spent all morning climbing around Angels Landing, but it was SO refreshing that we really enjoyed it. Even if you don't feel like getting wet, the 1 mile, paved hike on Riverside Walk leading you to the start of the Narrows is still worth doing.
As mentioned, the hike starts on a 1 mile, paved trail that leaves from where the tram drops you off. This hike is so easy that anyone can do it, and many people with strollers are on this part of the journey.
After a mile, the paved trail ends into the river. Here is the time to decide what your made of? If it's sugar, you might want to stay out, but if you are ready to take a wade, jump right in! It only takes a few minutes to get used to the fact that your hiking boots are submerged, and you get your river legs. The reason I have tagged this hike as Moderate in difficulty is because you will be fighting the current going out, have to walk on river rock, and if you are very short (and depending on the time of year) the river can get a little high. It's not really difficult, but it can be challenging from time to time.
If
you are so inclined, there are stores in Springdale (the town at the
entrance to the park) that rent water boots, walking sticks and wet
suits. Meh. Our hiking boots were just fine. Just make sure you are
wearing good shoes with closed toes. I was shocked at how many people
try to do this barefoot!! NO WAY! If you are a little unsturdy on your
feet a walking stick will definitely help since you will be walking
against the current, and climbing over river rock, but the deepest the
river ever got on my in the distance we went was to my knees - and I'm
short.
After we spent about an hour hiking the river, we found a place along the side of Riverside Walk on the way back to relax and dry out our hiking boots a bit. A BIG recommendation - bring your flip flops with you. Because the Riverside Walk trail is paved and so easy you can take off your wet boots and finish up the day in your flip flops. Much nicer than walking around in soggy socks!!
